This event is a once in a lifetime experience for fishing enthusiasts.  It is held annually and hundreds of boats from around the world arrive for the event.  It offers contestants millions of dollars in prizes.

The tournaments have been run in the Los Cabos region of the Baja Peninsula for the past three decades.  There are three tournaments.  The East Cape Offshore Tournament in Buenavista takes place during July each year and the Los Cabos Offshore Charity Tournament and Black & Blue Marlin Tournament take place in Cabo San Lucas during October each year.

The Tournament Details

The Black & Blue Tournament last for five days in total.  One day is allocated for registration, three for actual fishing and a final day for the presentation of awards.  There is a daily jackpot which is split among the fishermen who are the most highly placed.  There are other awards, such as for the best captains and the best teams.  These awards consider points obtained from fishing smaller species, such as tuna and others.

The name has been taken from the two targets, namely the black and blue marlin.  To protect these particular species of marlin, only those weighing in excess of 300 lbs are eligible for prizes.  The smaller ones have to be released alive back into the ocean.  The records thus far for the largest fish caught are a blue marlin of 900 lbs and a black marlin of 640 lbs.  These were caught by Rocky Gentile and Martha McNab, in 1994 and 2006 respectively.

On the first day there is a cocktail party to attend after the registration has been completed.  The second day starts with the boats lining up, waiting for the shotgun start.  This is an exciting time as hundreds of boats go out at top speed, desperate to find the best place to find the marlin.  On the final day there is a special dinner when recognitions and awards are handed out.

A smaller ‘warm-up’ tournament is held a few days before, Bisbee’s Los Cabos Offshore.  This carries a total price of up to $300000.
