Campeche is a picturesque city located in Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula.  The city was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site during 1999.  It is easy to see why it gained this declaration as it offers visitors cobblestone streets, beautifully restored Spanish Colonial buildings and stone walls that were originally built to keep the pirates out of the city during the 17th and 18th centuries.

Although Campeche offers all these tourist attractions, it has stayed out of the public eye for a very long time.  This makes it a good choice if you are hoping to get away from the crowded attractions in other parts of the country.

This city was a Mayan village by the name of Kan pech.  It was colonized by the Spaniards during 1540 and set up as one of their main trading ports.  This is when it first attracted the attention of pirates who attacked the town repeatedly in the 1600s.  The stories about piracy are one of its main tourist attractions, as well as fishing which is still one of its main industries today.

Attractions

A visit to Campeche can keep you very busy.  You can take a walk through the centro historic streets.  This is where you can see the beautifully preserved Spanish Colonial buildings which are painted ochre, mint, egg yolk-yellow and peach.  The outside of the buildings have been restored, however when you look into the barred windows, you will notice that they are deserted.

You can pay a visit to the Museo de la Architecura Maya, which is located in one of the limestone bastions which were built to protect the city against pirates.  It offers you an overview of the state and information on the Mayan archaeological sites around the region.

There is the Plaza Principal, a beautiful square which has a Rococo-style gazebo placed in its center and bordered by carob trees.  The Catedral de Nuestra Senora de la Purisma Concepcion, dominates the skyline to the east of the plaza with its two towers.

If you are accustomed to visiting the Caribbean coast of Mexico, you may be disappointed with the waterfront in Campeche.  It is still worth visiting and a walk on the promenade in the evening will allow you to see the beauty of the area.

There are several places to eat and drink in the city.  You have quite a wide range of accommodation facilities you can choose from.

Prior to your visit to Campeche, you should ensure that you have all the necessary documentation required.  Apart from the usual identity documents, such as your passport, you need to obtain Mexican car insurance.  If you currently have car insurance in your country of residence, you should be aware that it will be invalid in Mexico.  You require Mexican auto insurance to ensure that you are fully covered while using the roads in Mexico. You can purchase your Mexican insurance policy from this URL.

You should consider that you are new to the country and their road system.  This puts you at risk of a potential accident, but if you have adequate Mexican auto insurance, you do not have to be concerned about having your vacation turn into a nightmare.

Unlike its northern neighbors, bargaining is part and parcel of Mexican business culture. You can enjoy these bargains as you hone your Spanish language and negotiation skills. But, don’t risk bargaining for Mexican auto insurance from shacks. Get it from reputable insurers.

By all means, no valid reason can cancel your insurance. Cancelation of coverage is unsafe. You’re only putting yourself into a terrible pit if you do it.
